PlatformEngr® Argo CD course

PlatformEngr Learn

Learn platform engineering by building it

Free, hands-on courses where you run real infrastructure, break it on purpose and fix it from Git.

Course 1 · start here

Argo CD: from commit to cluster

Install Argo CD on a real cluster and run it from Git: Applications, sync and self-heal, Helm and Kustomize, three repositories, private repos and sealed secrets, projects and RBAC as team boundaries, hooks and sync waves. Then debug seven failures on purpose and onboard a second team on your own.

  • 14 modules
  • kind or any cluster
  • About 12 hours
  • Self-paced

Course 2 · after Argo CD

Fleet GitOps

Run a fleet of Kubernetes clusters the way platform teams do: clusters from Terraform, a hub running Argo CD, add-ons and guardrails everywhere, products onboarded with one file, and every change, including production, through issues, pull requests and approvals. Then break it on purpose.

  • 13 modules
  • kind, AKS, EKS, GKE
  • About 10 hours
  • Self-paced

Backstage · part 1

Backstage: run your developer portal

Go from clicking around Backstage to running it: create the app, keep secrets out of Git, model teams and services in a true catalog that finds repos on its own, sign in with GitHub, build golden-path templates with your own TypeScript action, put docs next to the code, and ship it as an image you upgrade.

  • 11 modules
  • Your laptop
  • About 9 hours
  • Self-paced

Backstage · part 2

Backstage plugins: build your own

Build a production-readiness scorecard as a real Backstage plugin: a backend with its own database, config and schedule, tests, an extension point other teams extend with modules, a frontend plugin on the new frontend system, an entity card, and permissions.

  • 10 modules
  • Your laptop
  • About 7 hours
  • Self-paced

Why this is free

These courses began as hands-on workshops I ran for PlatformEngr. The people who attended kept asking for the material, so I turned it into a course anyone can follow and put it online. Nothing is gated and there is no sign-up.

I would rather you learn this properly and tell me where it breaks than keep it behind a form. Found a gap? Open an issue on the course's reference repo: argocd-gitops or fleet-gitops.
